add external antenna SMA connector (Dell latitude c840)
To connect my new 9dBi wifi antenna, it would be useful if I add a male-SMA connector directly on my Dell Latitude C840 case. As everybody knows there isn't much room in a laptop, but I find a good place on the right side of the case near the mini-pci card.
The SMA connector is located near the original dell's antenna, which it's kind of a rectangular metal plate.
The mini-pci card was taken from a Siemens Gigaset SE 505 54 Mbit/s WLAN Router. The Broadcom chipset is BCM4306KFB.

My pigtail (U.FL to SMA cable)

The pigtail is connected to the aux U.FL plug, the main U.FL plug is still connected to the dell's antenna.

1x u.fl rp-sma cable (20cm) also known as pigtail
1x rg58 cable (2m) (both side with sma connector)
1x wifi antenna 9dBi (sma connector)
Think you could do that with a compaq presario 2200?

I'm sitting in a great pub where I can eat, smoke, drink and pirate the free wireless from the corporate coffeeshop next door.
If only I had that BIG BAD ANTENNA! Time to get the screwdriver out and start hacking into this Dell Latitude
I noticed you ahve two connections on your wifi card (white and black). I also have 2...I was wondering which you connected your antenna to. thanks!
You can choice between main or aux (black or white). Both connections are enabled.
First of all sorry for my english..
Did you lost any gain when you disabled the other conector? I mean, when you don't have your big antenna with you..
Yes I lost a little bit compare to the original configuration. Maybe you can find a smaller antenna ?
How did you route the pigtail from the mini-PCI bay to the antenna block?
it's go through the laptop case.
its a lot cheaper to get everything on ebay
I've noticed 10db antennas on ebay, aren't those better? And does anybody know where the heck one can get that plus a pigtail that fits ubiquiti pcmcia cards? I want to try and get both from the same place.
I was wondering if you could help me out a little. When I was installing my wireless card, I accidentally broke the connector from the internal wireless card. I ordered a new antenna cabe and soldered it on, but I don't think it is right. Could you please tell me if the center part of the cable is supposed to be touching the antenna directly where the tab sticks out. Is there supposed to be a resistor there? I think it is supposed to be 50 ohm, but I have not had a chance to check it yet.
I know something is wrong because my connect speeds are horrible when I use it with the antenna hooked up. When I pulled the old wire off, the wire was not soldered directly, but I assumed it was supposed to be because there was solder on the antenna for the connection.
Thanks for any help.
May be there is something wrong with the soldering. Parts are very small.
I don't think there is a resistor between the center tab and the antenna cable.
Well, as much as I hate to admit it, you were right. It was a bad solder connection. I desoldered the assembly, recut the antenna wire and re-soldered it. It is now working great. Thanks for the help.
These components including antenna can be found on www.davido.nu
Thank you so much for the inspiration and instruction. I first saw this post over a year ago but not until last week did I try it. What an awesome result - thanks again!!
